Blesses Greek Wedding Band in Greek Wedding Ceremony
By Dieny Ferbianty
Joy and sorrows, achievements and losses are evidences that life is a blend of two extreme ideas – and the mankind knows how best to live it. If we look in to the course of evolution, mankind has found many social ways to add its colors. In this regard much kind of ceremonies plays key role. Wedding ceremonies are varying with the religious, geographical and social deviations around the world. Due to historical reasons, Greek weddings are given much respect in the western hemisphere. This article will discuss about the modern Greek weddings.
There are two main parts in Greek weddings: the Betrothal and the Marriage ceremonies. The bride and groom are first asked by the priest whether they had arrived of their own free will. Before the priest blesses the rings, the couple is then led inside the church. Then the best man places them on the right ring fingers of the bride and groom. To symbolize their life-long association, the ring is exchanged thrice between the bride and groom. The best man can either be a male “Koumparos” or a female “Koumpara”. Then to solemnize the greek wedding band ceremony, the priest then places his vestment over the couple’s crossed hands.
The next to be followed in Greek weddings is marriage ceremony. Two large, lighted candles hold by bride and groom or they are placed on the ground in front of them. These lighted candles symbolize the love and blessings of the Jesus Christ for the would-be husband and wife. The wedding crowns called “stephana” hold bythe priest over the couple. Then he makes the sign of cross three times. The bride and groom kiss the crowns thereafter, before the best man places them on their heads. Then the priest help them exchange crowns thrice, symbolizing their undividable union.
Then the responsibilities and duties of a marriage are read by the priest from the bible. To symbolize their common destiny and the share of joy and sorrows, they are asked to eat honey and nuts and drink red wine together. The red wine, symbolizing the blood of Jesus Christ, also carries a divine interpretation. Next they dance “The Dance of Isaiah”. In this dance the couple is led by the priest around the altar three times holding the bible in his hand. This dance symbolizes the
suggestion that the bride and groom were to follow the word of god. The circular dance or motion presents the eternity of life. Then The guests from both sides shower the couple with rice and rose petals to wish them a lasting and happy married life.
Next the priest would finally take back the crowns and ask the couple to release their hands while holding the bible. This carries a religious meaning: only god could separate a solemnized wife and husband after their union. Thereafter a wedding dance and reception would be the next course.
